The Reverse Migration Postcard

Pick your city on the map, type it, or enter coordinates. The route runs back from there to the Great Rift Valley, and the receipt changes with your pace: how far you walk each day, how many days a year you are on the move, and how long a generation lasts. The real journey was never straight.

A vintage postcard with a thin line drawn from a coastal city back to a rift valley.
One unbroken line home.

City coordinates are built in (136 cities; you can also enter “lat, lon”). Distance is a great-circle model from the Lake Turkana basin of the Great Rift Valley; the nonstop walk assumes the pace you choose every day of the year. Generations are years divided by the generation length you choose. The out-of-Africa figure (~65,000 years) is the dispersal date in the footsteps dataset. The land outline is Natural Earth 110m (public domain). The real journey took tens of thousands of years and was never straight — the receipt says so.
