The Shared Lexicon

Words change across thousands of languages, but a few primal sounds echo everywhere: “mama”, “water”, “fire”. Click a concept star to split it into soundwaves that travel out to the language families, then watch its word morph through five writing systems.

Sound-alikes across families are not proof of common descent: nursery sounds such as “mama” are babbling universals (Jakobson 1960). Words are transliterated; the sound is a synthesized vowel and hum, not a recording. A single proto-world family is not proven.
